Carla, from Hotel Casci checked us out about 11:15am. She was nice enough to call our next destination, Malvarina, in Assisi to tell Mama Maria that we would be there for dinner. Kisses from Carla (with brochures to bring here for advertisement), free beverages for the road and we were off. This is our 3rd time to this wonderful little agriturismo. We picked up our car at noon (somehow we ended up with a BMW) and off we went. Our last trip here was a nightmare, as we got lost and didn't get here until 10pm. We turned Bella, our GPS on and hoped she would do her job. Bella kept saying "recalculating" over and over. Ken was ready to turn her annoying "recalculating" voice off when I realized the problem. We had changed Bella to pedestrian mode and the poor girl couldn't keep up ! Once changed to driving, we were good to go. We stopped mid-way at an autogrill (rest stop) and had great pinnini for lunch. It's a stand at a table and eat kind of deal. Jen found us a spot next to an elderly man. She kept bumping his table by mistake, which got us "talking" to him. I told him we were going to Assisi and asked how far it was. He answered, but I have no idea what he said. He had 2 teeth so had to drink a beer to help his Panini go down. Good to have him on the road ! He had come from Naples which is probably 6 hours awayWe arrived at Malvarina swiftly because of Bella, at about 3:30pm and checked in (Claudio still uses paper ledger), got our complimentary bottle of wine and went to the pool to toast Bella. Thanks Joel, for adding all of the locations and hooking us up with Bella ! It is CRAZY windy here ! For those few people who haven't heard Ken and I gush about Malvarina, click on the website on our itinerary. It is a very sweet and simple agriturismo. The rooms were once horse stables. There is no phone, TV or air conditioning in the room. Mama Maria is an incredible cook who has been written up in Bon Appétit. Dinner will be here each night.It was hard to find out exactly what we were eating, but between the 4 of us, here is what we came up with.Dinner on our 1st night:wine and water is free flowingmelon with prosciuttogreen and red peppers grilled along with a carved out tomato filled with mild tunarisotto with wine and mushrooms with egg dish2 kinds of cannelloni (one had pork, the other spinach), fettuccini pomodororolled pork that had been cooked in "something"pancetta, sausage and pork ribs that had been cooked over wooden coals (the fireplace was in the room we were eating)potato salad, mixed green salad and green been saladslice of watermelon and a cream/custard pudding4 kinds of after dinner drinks "firewater" to choose from
